      <image:caption>Sheffer Gallery, Darlington, Sydney/Eora September 2019 Grit, sometimes it’s how I think about it all. As in dirty, messy, can’t get off grit. Now part of you, inside of you, that kind of grit. The type of grit that you know you should get checked. It’s the type, where the pain in your back starts at twenty-three, you show it to someone here and you show it to someone there. The grit gets poked, pushed, nurtured but never fixed, it’s the type of fused grit now. I don’t see any of you for days, weeks and then ten months, some not even for years. I fold. We grow. Feelings got caught. Feelings that got trapped between two doors opening towards one another. I try to forge a 170 cm x 50 cm space. Sometimes I think bad design, fraught system. Yes, yea fraught but so painfully real that we call it beautiful. Smaller than a spec in time and space but significant in complexity, grand even- so we tell ourselves, so he reminds me.       <image:caption>Stepping Into Tomorrow Gallery, Darlinghurst, Sydney/Eora June 2021 In Entangled Kin, Chanel Tobler navigates an evolving awareness of the romantic illusions that snag us all—perhaps in different ways and at different times, yet always and ironically, to the degree that we are willing to love in the first place. Such a process of observation, in her own words, can result in ‘a gain via a loss’—yet one must be willing to dive deep into the space of honest reflection to find any such reward. Her works and words capture the act of such a dive. In this suite of abstract drawings, Tobler’s material process mirrors the weaving, ambiguous, gravity-free nature of the heart and mind in battle: lines, shadows and nebulous forms oscillate between optimism, caution, serenity, confusion, abandonment and peace— occupying the picture plane in the same way that our emotions occupy our bodies. Both must be sensed and felt before being understood. Between the four walls of their paper supports, these marks dwell at times within murky, almost tear-stained tonal fields— sombre spaces that speak of a coming to terms with many things: disappointment, release, and the limitations of relationships. ‘I left myself to be dragged in the mud, lose grace, fall low.’ Yet in almost equal measure, a resiliency—de ant punches of highly saturated pigment speak of a picking back up: they pulse through the air, refusing to dwell without insight, or surrender without response. These drawings can be seen as a series of visual containers, full of the convoluted interactions between self and other; past, present and uncertain futures which will be built by those we do love, have loved, and those we are yet to love.       <image:caption>Micheal Reid NB, Newport Beach, Sydney/Eora February 2022 The words that give sense to the time stand in the pages of books not mine. I give thanks to minds that function high. I mean. Warmth. The words passed, exchanged, gifted, felt and held. A beautifully sore spot for warmth fading, warmth generating. Must leave warmth to get supplies to maintain the fire tho. Learning. Progressing. Stalling, progressing. Learning about care and repair. I’m not in the body yet, not in here, not even close. But it’s about a care for and a repair of. See. Du Mir I. A compilation of ill fitting parts. Du Mir I. So drawings happen, because drawings function as the bones of thinking, of sense. Drawing functions as a door to seeing, to knowing, to being. Drawing as the thing that begins an enquiry/the next journey. Bore witness to ways I’ve never seen my brain contort before. This is just the beginning, still gathering brave, shoes that will do the job, and packaging sustenance to maintain clarity and will. Uncertain, experimental, not founded on logic. Stray parts, overflow bits, working blind, working by working. Following threads finer than hair. A sharp hard woman a soft This is not stagnation, hold still more some. Floating, morphing, no more shape shifting. I’ve made it to base camp- a house in the sky. Waiting, release, conflict, love and the abyss.</image:caption>

I mean. Warmth. The words passed, exchanged, gifted, felt and held. A beautifully sore spot for warmth fading, warmth generating. Must leave warmth to get supplies to maintain the fire tho. Learning. Progressing. Stalling, progressing. Learning about care and repair. I’m not in the body yet, not in here, not even close. But it’s about a care for and a repair of. See. Du Mir I. A compilation of ill fitting parts. Du Mir I. So drawings happen, because drawings function as the bones of thinking, of sense. Drawing functions as a door to seeing, to knowing, to being. Drawing as the thing that begins an enquiry/the next journey. Bore witness to ways I’ve never seen my brain contort before. This is just the beginning, still gathering brave, shoes that will do the job, and packaging sustenance to maintain clarity and will. Uncertain, experimental, not founded on logic. Stray parts, overflow bits, working blind, working by working. Following threads finer than hair. A sharp hard woman a soft This is not stagnation, hold still more some. Floating, morphing, no more shape shifting. I’ve made it to base camp- a house in the sky. Waiting, release, conflict, love and the abyss.</image:caption>

Weeping and sealing, and re-cracking, then weeping more. The gash was always there. Now just active again, a living volcano, fissures, heat, cooling, stone. Over and over. I tell of homelands and heart-felts, probably more heart belts/welts. The latest activity generated new timelines and lifetimes. Now existing somewhere in-between the lines, half in half out, not entirely anywhere but in a body persisting . Existing in the new colours of the land I’ve left and the land where my body is finding generic rest. I just think though, we’re alive in the same time in history.</image:caption>
